Terence Blanchard Flow

Terence Blanchard Flow

MP3@192 - 100 MB

Flow is trumpet player Terence Blanchard's second album for Blue Note. Over the years Blue Note's recorded some of the best trumpeters the world has ever known; from Miles Davis and Lee Morgan to Freddie Hubbard and Don Cherry. Terence Blanchard manages to successfully draw on the label's rich history, moving with ease from a ballad like "Over There" to the organic build and insistent propulsion of the album's longest track, "Harvesting Dance." He embraces melodic precision, but always in accord with a resonant emotional foundation. Producer Herbie Hancock is a perfect fit for this project, bridging the traditional realms of post-bop and modernist inclinations. --David Greenberger

Various Artists - Ken Burns Jazz : The Story of America's Music (5 CD)

Various Artists - Ken Burns Jazz : The Story of America's Music (5 CD)

This five-CD box set soundtrack to filmmaker Ken Burns's 10-part, 19-hour documentary Jazz spans nearly a century of jazz styles, from the martial rhythms of James Reese Europe to the soul-jazz of Grover Washington Jr.
It includes time-tested classics like Benny Goodman's 1938 classic, "Sing, Sing, Sing"; John Coltrane's chanting 1965 immortal track, "A Love Supreme"; Billie Holiday's blue-ember ballad, "God Bless the Child"; and Ella Fitzgerald peeling off "A-Tisket A-Tasket." Bebop is represented by Charlie Parker's orchestral bop version of "Just Friends"; Thelonious Monk's nocturnal calling card, "'Round Midnight"; and Dizzy Gillespie's "Salt Peanuts" and "Groovin' High." The jazz-instrumentalist-as-singer comes to life on Coleman Hawkins's "Body and Soul" and Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers' "Doodlin'." Clifford Brown and Max Roach's "I Get a Kick out of You" epitomizes the hard-bop era, while Miles Davis's "So What" stands as the modal masterpiece. The cool school is in session with Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan dishing out "Walkin' Shoes," and the Modern Jazz Quartet's soulful elegy "Django" straddles all the above musical orbits. As for Django Reinhardt, he's featured on "Shine" with the justly famed Le Quartet du Hot Club de France. Louis Armstrong's "West End Blues" and "Potato Head Blues" and Duke Ellington's rousing rendition of Billy Strayhorn's anthem, "Take the A Train," and his moody "Solitude" show why they are the Olympian masters of this art form--and the most frequently featured artists in the series. Although Ken Burns tries bringing the music up-to-date with Wynton Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson, and two jazz-hip-hop-influenced tracks--Herbie Hancock's robotic "Rockit" and the French-language "Un Aige en Danger" by MC Solaar and bass legend Ron Carter--there are significant holes here. After Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman, the avant-garde period from the late 1960s to the 1980s is lacking. And aside from the bossa nova hit "Desafinado," Latin jazz is also missing. It's a tough task summarizing jazz in five CDs, and Burns has given us a vibrant and vivid multicolored aural portrait of the music.

Nat Adderley - Introducing Nat Adderley (1955)
MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ Covers + Scans ~ RS.com ~ 84mb ~ 5% File Recovery
Genre: Jazz

Allaboutjazz.com:
The Adderley brothers were key players in the birth of hard bop, a style which grew out of the advancements of Bud Powell and other pioneers who formed a sound that many artists took to the bank for years. At this point in time Cannonball had formed his first quintet with Nat as a sideman; facing indifferent recognition, Cannonball went on to join Miles Davis and met with far greater acclaim. The two would later reunite in the second Cannonball Adderley quintet with much greater success; after his stint with Davis, the public was much more receptive to what Cannonball had to say. This album is a bit unusual in that Nat is the leader and Cannonball is the sideman, although since the altoist is such a pervasive influence and all the tunes we co-written by the two, the distinction of who is in charge makes little difference.

The Adderley brothers were always at their best working in the hard bop vein. Although they specialized in different instruments, their styles were remarkably similar; playful and lively, with a generous helping of the blues. They wear their Parker-Gillespie influences on their sleeves, trading off fluttering arpeggios and staccato runs at a rapid fire pace, and obviously prefer sticking to the higher register given their choice of instruments (Nat is one of the few jazz players to specialize in the cornet). Most of the songs here are skillfully designed to exploit the talents of both, although they are interchangeable with hundreds of other hard bop themes from the era. However, they truly seem to be enjoying themselves here, indulging their love of playing jazz.

You would also be hard pressed to find a rhythm section better than the one assembled here; all three were highly regarded sidemen who amongst them have probably appeared on over a third of all sessions recorded during this period. Horace Silver would go on to record greasy soul anthems for the hard bop generation like “Song For My Father”; his sharp attack provides a bed of nails for the horns to blow over.

Allmusic.com:
The debut recording session of the Adderley brothers, saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley and trumpeter Nat. Given the shining star of recognition that Cannonball achieved in his short life, it's amazing that the brothers' first date would be with Nat as leader. And the band on this record is, well, stellar, even for that time in 1955: Paul Chambers on bass, Horace Silver on piano, and Roy Haynes on drums. Issued in the Desert Island Discs series by Verve, this is truly one of them. It's a hard, post-bop date that features a quintet of excellent players having a good old time in the studio. All tunes are by the Adderley brothers, who, at this time, were free to exploit their own identities (Cannonball had yet to be saddled with his "new Bird" status, since Charlie Parker had been dead less than six months). They were undiscovered and under-heard, playing only a smattering of dates in New York clubs after their exodus from Florida. Many of the tunes here, "Watermelon," "Little Joanie Walks," "Two Brothers," "Crazy Baby," and "Blues for Bohemia," would be in both men's sets for decades to come. And whether ballad or bebop, the rhythm section kept the front line in check. The exuberance is allowed by the trio of Silver, Chambers, and Haynes, rather than dictated by the Adderleys. It's gorgeous to hear all the Benny Carter in Cannonball's playing, and the Roy Eldridge in Nat's. Going track for track or looking for standouts here would be fruitless. This is a day in 1955, top to bottom, when some of the finest musicians in the world didn't know it yet. They got together for a good time and a blowing session that became a legendary moment in the history of jazz. Enough said.

Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis - Two Men With The Blues

Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis - Two Men With The Blues 2008
Genre Blues | 1 cd | 223 vbr kbps avg MP3 | No Covers | 85 MB

In case you missed it, back in 2006 singer and guitarist Willie Nelson—then 73 years young— got busted in Louisiana. Highway police following Nelson's band bus noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming out of the windows, stopped the vehicle and found somewhere between one and a half and two pounds of weed and a bag of magic mushrooms. A US cable TV host reported they also found a jar of formaldehyde containing Waylon Jennings' foot.

Nelson, who made his name in country music, but who for decades has ploughed a wider furrow which also includes blues and a little jazz, and who, even at his advanced age, still hits the road for months at a time, lives a life not unlike the jazz musicians of yesteryear. He also shares jazz musicians' graveyard sense of humor. The other occupants of the bus—variously aged between 75 and 50 years—were all shaken down along with Nelson, except the 75 year old, who slept through the entire event. When he later asked Nelson why the police had let him carry on sleeping, Nelson replied, “I told them you were dead.”

The bust gives a general resonance to Two Men With The Blues and in particular to “Ain't Nobody's Business,” the penultimate track on this live recording made at the Lincoln Jazz Center's Allen Room with trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and his band over two nights in January, 2007.

The music—which mostly inhabits an uptempo blues 'n' boogie jump band style reaching back to the late 1940s—is the sort of stuff you might hear, if you were lucky, in a roadhouse in the southern states anytime over the past 60 years, albeit played here by musicians of international standing—Marsalis' regular small band augmented by Nelson's harmonica player, Mickey Raphael.

It isn't risk taking music. It's meant to make you kick back and get happy—and it does. Nelson's voice is still in pretty good, smoke-cured shape. It shows a little untoward strain on Hoagy Carmichael's interval-leaping “Stardust,” but this is made up for by his reading of Carmichael's equally beauticious “Georgia On My Mind.” His guitar playing, in which shades of Django Reinhardt mingle with those of T-Bone Walker, is surprisingly substantial. He solos, briefly and delightfully, on seven of the 10 tracks, and ravishingly on two of them, including his own “Rainy Day Blues.” Marsalis and saxophonist Walter Blanding also turn in succinct but attractive solos.

The sort of album which gives one-off supergroup projects a good name.

Personnel: Willie Nelson: vocals, guitar; Wynton Marsalis: vocals, trumpet; Walter Blanding: saxophone; Mickey Raphael: harmonica; Dan Nimmer: piano; Carlos Henriquez: bass; Ali Jackson: drums.

2.REGGIE OF CHESTER.

5.GAZA STRIP.
6.STAND BY.

A gem of an early album from Lee Morgan -- quite different than his work as a leader for the Savoy label during the same period! Although Morgan's only a wee lad at the time, the album's got an incredible sense of warmth and imagination -- one that's steeped in lessons learned from Horace Silver and Art Blakey, and played with a style that's as richly expressive as it is soulful -- a no-nonsense, no-tricks approach to the trumpet that gave Morgan a voice that was clearly different from predecessors like Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Fats Navarro! The album's got a stellar lineup that includes Horace Silver, Wilbur Ware, and Philly Joe Jones -- plus the virtually unknown Clarence Sharpe, who makes a rare appearance on alto on this session! The whole thing's great, and filled with unique titles that include "Reggie Of Chester", "Little T", "Gaza Strip", and "Roccus".

Liner Note Authors: Ed Williams; Bob Blumenthal.

This rare Lee Morgan Blue Note date from 1968 is one of the few discs by the legendary trumpeter that didn't see a large following when it was originally released. Unlike the colossal THE SIDEWINDER, this session is subtler in its approach to the funky sounds that Morgan had ushered into existence a few years earlier. Still, the masterful playing of stars like Morgan, Jackie McLean, Cedar Walton, and Billy Higgins, coupled with some exceptionally creative tunes, make this a worthwhile jewel in the Lee Morgan treasure chest. Also significant is the rare appearance of tenor man Frank Mitchell, who had appeared briefly with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers.

Morgan and company set the groove early with the bossa nova-tinged title track. Higgins swings hard on Morgan's "Short Count," which gives the trumpeter and his guests plenty of breathing room for some healthy solos. The jazzy rock shadings of "Psychedelic" are no doubt a reflection of the coming trend that would hit full swing in the '70s. Also included here are three tracks from an unreleased session that feature pianist Harold Mabern in place of Walton. Other highlight cuts include the bouncing "Afreaka" and Morgan's intricate "Anti Climax."

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on June 25 and July 1, 1965.

More quintessential hard bop from one of the genre's leading figures at the height of his considerable powers as a composer and trumpeter. Morgan had just returned to solo work a year earlier after his second stint with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers; in 1965 the trumpeter also released CORNBREAD and THE RUMPROLLER and did numerous sessions as a sideman. Morgan composed the title track, and three others including the Coots/Gillespie ballad "You Go To My Head" round things out.

"Yes I Can, No You Can't" opens with the rhythm section laying down a churning vamp; the horns enter with a typical Morgan statement, funky, swaggering and confident. "Speedball" is a bebop-style blues, but more relaxed, with a secondary theme appearing in the third chorus of the head. "Trapped," a modified minor blues, is more urgent, while "The Gigolo" is a brooding and majestic jazz waltz more evocative of a bullfight than of the ballroom. Throughout, the ensemble work is tight and the solos crackle with passion and joy.

1. These Are Soulful Days
2. Lion And The Wolff, The
3. Midtown Blues
4. Nakatini Suite

Personnel: Lee Morgan (trumpet)
Jackie McClean (alto saxophone)
Bobby Timmons (piano)
Paul Chambers (bass)
Art Blakey (drums)

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on April 28, 1960. Originally released on Blue Note (84034). Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff and Bob Blumenthal.

Digitally remastered by Rudy Van Gelder.

This is part of Blue Note's RVG series.

Though it's worth noting that Miles Davis, Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown, Donald Byrd, Booker Little, Woody Shaw and Freddie Hubbard were prodigious, original trumpet stylists while still in their teens and early 20s, arguably no young trumpet player ever burst on the jazz scene with the brash authority and joy of Lee Morgan. Debuting in the challenging Dizzy Gillespie big band as an eighteen year-old, Morgan often found himself featured on the master's own "Night In Tunisia." And for many long-time jazz fans, Morgan's presence in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers of the late '50s-early '60s (with Wayne Shorter, Curtis Fuller, Bobby Timmons and Jymie Merrit) marked the spiritual and aesthetic peak of that great band.

LEEWAY presents Morgan in an all-star ensemble featuring the tart, swinging altoist Jackie McLean--a charter member of Blakey's earlier edition of the Jazz Messengers--and everyone's favorite bassist, Paul Chambers. Together with Jazz Messengers Blakey and Timmons, Chambers helps to rhythmically supercharge the soulful shuffles and blues which distinguish this upbeat blowing session. "These Are Soulful Days" is a funky hard bop anthem by Cal Massey, with a supple shift to 3/4 in the bridge. Morgan follows laid-back solos by Chambers, Timmons and McLean with an electrifying concoction of the rhythmic double time, vocal slurs and cascading melodic devices--each and every note sweetly articulated.

On "The Lion And The Wolff," Morgan answers McLean's bluesy recreated figures with riffing phrases of his own, building enormous tension by alternating stunning half-valve effects, taut vamping patterns and swinging syncopations, until drummer Blakey is like to bust. The rhythmic stops and starts of "Midtown Blues" inspire Morgan to a fiercely riffing solo full of long rolling passages and cunning repeated riffs, culminating in a magnificent display of brassy, blustery lyricism--followed by an equally swinging McLean--as Blakey and Timmons allow the hot grease to spill all over this rocking shuffle-beat. And the extended form "Nakatini Suite," with its exotic Afro-Cuban intro, swinging release and elliptical bridge, illuminates Morgan's mastery of complex harmonic materials, as he surfs effortlessly through the changes, punctuating his melodic elisions with soulful cries.

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on February 15, 1964. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff.

Morgan's playing maintains its articulate brightness, but his notes and phrases are carefully shaded. This is matched by Wayne Shorter's sax work (also simultaneously edgy and lyrical), Grant Green's glowing guitar and Herbie Hancock's atmospheric contributions. Lee should also be recognized as a significant composer, since all the tracks here, with their floating themes and protean solo sections, are from his pen. SEARCH FOR THE NEW LAND live up to its title, finding a high ground of intelligent, evocative work and outstanding playing.

Lee Morgan - City Lights (1957)

Producer: Alfred Lion

1. Siliver's Serenade

5. Nineteen Bars

Lee Morgan - Trumpet
Curtis Fuller - Trombone
George Coleman - Saxophone
Paul Chambers - Bass
Ray Bryant - Piano
Art Taylor - Drums

Lee Morgan was only a tender 19 years of age when he led this 1957 Blue Note date, but his technique surpassed most of the more seasoned trumpeters on the scene. Technically agile and possessed of a bright, clear tone (he clearly belongs to the lineage of Dizzy Gillespie), Morgan shines on CITY LIGHTS, and his sidemen--including saxophonist George Coleman, trombonist Curtis Fuller, and bassist Paul Chambers--are no slouches, either. Strong writing from jazz composer Benny Golson makes this a thoroughly enjoyable hard-bop session.
The 2006 reissue boasts beautifully remastered sound.

As Lee himself points out in his on--tape introduction to these three nights of live recording for Blue Note Records, the band had no plans to play anything Lee had already recorded, because, as Morgan mutters, "It just wouldn't make any sense." This sprawling three-CD set does, in the end, include a version of "The Sidewinder," as well as "Speedball," an uptempo blues from Lee's album THE GIGOLO, with Jack DeJohnette guesting. But even these tunes are rendered in a more abstract fashion than the way they were originally recorded, and on the balance of the material here you can feel the effects of the decade loud and clear.

Solos lean towards the exploratory and the cathartic, with the result that no tune clocks in under eleven minutes, and bassist Jymie Merritt's "Absolutions" pushes well past the twenty minute mark. Morgan's generosity as a leader extends beyond providing room to stretch out: with the exception of "The Sidewinder" and "Speedball," all of the material for these three nights was composed by either Merritt, saxophonist Bennie Maupin or pianist Harold Mabern.

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on January 13, 1967.

It's hard to picture Lee Morgan daintily stepping through the changes to cocktail-hour versions of "My Funny Valentine" or "Misty." Fortunately, that's not what he's doing here. A lot of thought went into this session, which nevertheless remained in the Blue Note vaults from the time of its recording in 1967 until 1998. Duke Pearson's arrangements play Morgan's trumpet off of a reed section of James Spaulding, Wayne Shorter and Pepper Adams, which is in turn supported by the no-slouch rhythm section of Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Mickey Roker.

Morgan and Pearson may not have had Miles Davis' capacity to bring Broadway tunes into the jazz repertoire for good, but they did succeed in choosing songs of various vintages that had not yet been played to death, including "Somewhere" from West Side Story, and a then-current pop hit, Tim Hardin's "If I Were A Carpenter." No need to cringe--there are plenty of great jazz artists who should only be lucky enough to have made a record this hip while drawing on contemporary material.

Lee Morgan - The Last Session
MP3|320KBPS|152MB

A cornerstone of the Blue Note label roster prior to his tragic demise, Lee Morgan was one of hard bop's greatest trumpeters, and indeed one of the finest of the '60s.

02. In What Direction Are You Headed? (16:20) (Mabern)
03. Angela (6:24) (Merritt)
04. Croquet Ballet (10:57) (Harper)
05. Inner Passions Out (17:34) (Waits)

Lee Morgan - Trumpet, Flugelhorn
Grachan Moncur III - Trombone
Bobbi Humphrey - Flute
Billy Harper - Tenor Sax, Alto Flute
Harold Mabern - Piano, El Piano
Jymie Merritt - El Bass
Reggie Workman - Bass, Percussion
Freddie Waits - Drums, Recorder

Produced by George Butler
Recorded September 17 & 18 1971 at Van Gelders Studio
Masterred by Ron McMaster using 20-bit SBM

The final recording by Lee Morgan, this double LP has its moments but is somewhat erratic with some modal-oriented selections that ramble on too long and a forgettable debut (on "Croquet Ballet") for the trumpeter's discovery, flutist Bobbi Humphrey. Morgan (who was still just 33) is in generally good form and his band (with Billy Harper on tenor, keyboardist Harold Mabern, Jymie Merritt or Reggie Workman on bass and drummer Freddie Waits) is quite stimulating but the music has an uncomfortable and incomplete feel to it. It does leave one wondering what Lee Morgan would have done next had he lived.

Born July 10, 1938 in Philadelphia

The Vee Jay material of Wayne Shorter and Lee Morgan has been configured in various packages over the years, most recently in the form of two previous compact disc reissues and Japanese issues to boot. So why bother picking up this set, which basically includes items that have been available before? The answer to that question simply lies in the fact that never has this material been presented in such a definitive manner, including documentation and remastered sound quality that is undoubtedly superior to any previous issue of this material.

Here’s Lee Morgan and Expoobident

Now that the obvious has been discussed, let’s put this important music into context. Lee Morgan, who already had a solid series of Blue Note releases under his belt, joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in 1958. This gig would keep him busy and it would be about two years before the trumpeter would record another Blue Note session as a leader, a March 1960 date that would produce Leeway. One month prior to that, he would cut his first set for Vee Jay, Here’s Lee Morgan. With boss Blakey at the drums, Morgan’s quintet includes the stout tenor stylings of Clifford Jordan and the in sync rhythm team of Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers. Highlights include Milt Jackson’s quirky “Off Spring,” which Kelly introduces ever so tastily, “Bess,” a medium shuffle with Morgan muted, and “Running Brook,” which incorporates some of Morgan’s delicious half-valve effects.

Eight months after his first Vee Jay sessions and a bit over a year before Morgan’s lone Jazzland date, Take Twelve, we get the second Morgan Vee Jay album, Expoobident. Clifford Jordan and Blakey are again on hand, but this time the studio is in Chicago and so local legend Eddie Higgins and Art Davis round out the rhythm team. We get a few standards and some well-penned originals by Clifford Jordan (“Lost and Found” and “The Hearing”), Wayne Shorter (“Fire”), Eddie Higgins’ title track, and Morgan’s own “Triple Track.” The mood continues to be animated and Morgan’s horn crackles with enthusiasm.

Introducing Wayne Shorter, Second Genesis, and Wayning Moments

Whereas Lee Morgan had already documented his work on that previously mentioned series of Blue Note sides; tenor man Wayne Shorter’s recording career would begin with work at Vee Jay. He participated in Kelly Great, a 1959 Vee Jay date for pianist Wynton Kelly. Then, in the span of two days in November of 1959, Shorter would cut his own record for Vee Jay and make his first recorded appearance with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers (the Blue Note set Africaine ). Including a nod to Shorter’s present employer and a taste of Miles Davis’ current backing group, the saxophonist shares the front line with Morgan, with Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb in support. All the tunes are by Shorter and even at this early stage his writing genius is apparent. The longest track, “Down in the Depths,” also makes clear what a distinctive and individualistic improviser Shorter evidently was.

Following more Blakey sessions for Blue Note, including The Big Beat, Night in Tunisia, and Meet You At the Jazz Corner of the World, Wayne would cut his next Vee Jay date in October of 1960, although it would not be released for over a decade. Done in Chicago, Second Genesis finds Shorter fronting a quartet with Blakey, Cedar Walton, and Bob Cranshaw. Aside from three standards, the program again consists of originals and Shorter’s tenor voice continues to speak volumes in a way that marks him as one of the true innovators.

With a constant schedule of recording and touring activity with Art Blakey and the beginning of a soon to be budding relationship with Blue Note, it’s surprising that Shorter would have time to return to Chicago to cut one last album for Vee Jay. Returning the favor of guesting on Freddie Hubbard’s Ready For Freddie, Wayne would feature Hubbard on the front line for Wayning Moments, which also includes the rather odd rhythm team of Eddie Higgins, Jymie Merritt, and Marshall Thompson. This seems to be Shorter’s least interesting of the three Vee Jay sides, possibly because of the smaller number of Wayne originals and the aforementioned backing ensemble. Still, many fine moments can be found.

The Young Lions

Closing out this package, we get an all-star date that happens to feature Morgan and Shorter along with the tart and underrated alto saxophone of Frank Strozier. It’s interesting to note that our two main stars, along with pianist Bobby Timmons, were with Blakey at the time, Strozier and bassist Bob Cranshaw were members of the Chicago cooperative MJT+3, Louis Hayes was from Cannonball Adderley’s band, and Albert “Tootie” Heath was stoking the fires for J.J. Johnson. This is a superb meeting that highlights some groovy writing by Shorter and Timmons. “Scourin’” is especially choice, with its ascending line and a Shorter solo that includes low register honks and a rare quote from “Do You Know the Muffin Man?”

Dusko Goykovich - A Handful O' Soul (2005)

Dusko Goykovich - A Handful O' Soul (2005)
MP3 | 320Kbps | RS.com | 120mb | Covers
Genre: Jazz

Enja Records:
In the summer of 2003 the president of the Republic of Serbia, Zoran Zivkovic, invited composer and trumpet player Dusko Goykovich to take an active part in the official celebration of 200 years of Serbian national identity. Born in 1931 in Jajce (Bosnia-Herzegovina), Goykovich had started his long international jazz career as an 18-year-old when joining the Radio Big Band of Belgrade. Dusko has been inspired by Serbian music for decades: He not only initiated the Balkan Jazz movement with his 1966 album "Swinging Macedonia" but has made good use of Balkan melodies and rhythms in most diverse jazz contexts. Of course, he accepted Zivkovic's offer with pleasure and suggested the creation of an international big band for this exceptional occasion.

In February 2004 The International Jazz Orchestra was formed -- composed of extraordinary musicians from the United States, Japan, Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Belgium, Austria, France, Slovenia, and of course Serbia. With support from the Serbian state as well as the Embassy of the United States of America, Austrian Cultural Forum in Belgrade, British Council, French Cultural Centre, Goethe Institute, and Italian Cultural Institute, an international top event took place that was going to relaunch Serbian jazz life. After a sold-out concert the orchestra went into the studio for two days, and the result is an album that offers the essence of Dusko Goykovich's big band philosophy.

Except for two special features for trombonist/singer Phil Abraham ("Don't Get Around Much Anymore") and ex-Basie orchestra altoist Brad Leali ("Jeep's Blues"), the album presents Dusko's arrangements throughout -- including great standard ballads ("I Fall In Love Too Easily", "Summertime") as well as his own evergreen originals: the soul-drenched "A Handful O' Soul", the odd-metered "Yugo Blues", the beboppish "Remember Dizzy" and the Serbian-influenced "Balkan Blue". With Dusko's relaxed arrangements and a bunch of thrilling solos by Britain's alto wizard Peter King, Germany's baritone giant Michael Lutzeier, the leader himself and others, "A Handful O' Soul" is a brilliant document of jazz orchestral maturity.

Ornette Coleman - Free Jazz (1961)

Ornette Coleman - Free Jazz (1961)
MP3|VBR256KBPS|69MB

1. Free Jazz
2. First Take - (bonus track)

Ornette Coleman Double Quartet:
Ornette Coleman (alto saxophone)
Freddie Hubbard (trumpet)
Don Cherry (pocket trumpet)
Eric Dolphy (bass clarinet)
Scott LaFaro, Charlie Haden (bass)
Billy Higgins, Ed Blackwell (drums)

Recorded at A&R Studios, New York, New York on December 21, 1960. Originally released on Atlantic (1364).

The original cover of "Free Jazz" (1960) featured a reproduction of one of Jackson Pollock's drip paintings, "White Light." The reference is an apt one--like Pollock, Ornette has always had faith that out of chaos, intuition and freedom,
beauty will emerge. For the recording session of "Free Jazz," Ornette brought with him two quartets (each with bass drums, and two horns) and had them play simultaneously, giving them only a few very vague directions.

What emerged was, like a Pollock painting, a thing of primal beauty and power, formally strange and surprisingly dance-like. It is also (like a Pollock) better experienced than described.

Each quartet occupies their own stereo channel (Ornette, Don Cherry, Scott LaFaro and Billy Higgins are on the left channel; and Eric Dolphy, Freddie Hubbard, Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell are on the right). The music that comes out of the speakers is much more than an experiment; it's also much more than just the collective sound of all these wonderful musicians. It's an ecstatic work that has been an inspiration to creative musicians for over 40 years, and it will continue to be for many years to come.

Freddie Hubbard - Backlash (1967)

Freddie Hubbard - Backlash (1967)
MP3 ~ 320Kbps ~ Covers/Scans ~ RS.com ~ 110mb ~ 5% Recovery
Genre: Jazz

Cduniverse.com:
Originally released in 1967, BACKLASH shows a young Freddie Hubbard beginning his explorations outside the confines of straight-ahead jazz. The tunes here have a rock-soul flavor and show Hubbard absorbing all that was in the air at that moment. The title track, penned by Donald Picket, easily rolls over the seductive groove laid down by drummer Otis Ray Appleton and showcases Hubbard's shining tone and the fine playing of his old friend, alto saxophonist James Spaulding.

As always, the influence of Clifford Brown is evident in Hubbard's playing, but there is also the echo of Lee Morgan's trumpet work on the classic '60s recording SIDEWINDER. On several cuts, including "Backlash" and, most notably, "Little Sunflower," the subtle percussion of Ray Barretto adds polish to the sweet Latin sheen. That latter track also benefits from Spaulding's delicate flute work. Pianist Albert Daily and bassist Bob Cunningham round out the rhythm section.

Personnel:
Freddie Hubbard - trumpet & fluegelhorn
James Spaulding - flute & alto sax
Albert Dailey - piano
Bob Cunningham - bass
Otis Ray Appleton - drums
Ray Barretto - percussion

Recorded at Atlantic Studios, New York, New York on October 19 & 24, 1966. Originally released on Atlantic (1477).

Tracks:
1. Backlash 4:10
2. The Return of the Prodigal Son 5:37
3. Little Sunflower 7:50

Oscar Peterson - The Vienna Concert (1968)

Oscar Peterson - The Vienna Concert (1968)
Mp3 @320kbps - Rapidshare 167mb + Scans - Genre: Jazz

This CD evidently originates from a fan's home taping of a European radio broadcast of a concert by the Oscar Peterson Trio in Vienna on November 9, 1968. An announcer is briefly heard over the introduction but, other than that, the only flaws occur as the recording level is occasionally overmodulated, resulting in some distortion (but not so much that it is unlistenable). In spite of the sound problems, the pianist is in top form, joined by bassist Sam Jones and drummer Bobby Durham, for a set that relies mainly on some of Peterson's favorite standards ("The Lamp Is Low" and "Someday My Prince Will Come") as well as Neal Hefti's "Little Darlin'," Bill Evans' "Waltz for Debby," and the leader's "Never Say Yes" and "Noreen's Nocturne." Compared to the immense quantity of commercial releases available by Oscar Peterson, especially live albums, this one can't be considered essential, but completists won't be disappointed with the consistently outstanding performances on this 71- minute CD. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

Dizzy Gillespie And Arturo Sandoval-To A Finland Station

Image

Code:

Sandoval, while still in Cuba, was influenced by jazz legends Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown, and Dizzy Gillespie, finally meeting him later in 1977. Gillespie promptly became a mentor and colleague, playing with Arturo in concerts in Europe and Cuba and later featuring him in The United Nations Orchestra. Sandoval defected to the United States of America while touring with Gillespie in 1990, and became a naturalized citizen in 1999.

Arturo Sandoval The Latin Train 1995

On 1995's Arturo Sandoval y el Tren Latino (Arturo Sandoval and the Latin Train), the Cuban-born multi-instrumentalist and his enormous band continue the unfortunate trend toward reducing the Latin part of their Latin jazz. Although guest stars on the caliber of the immortal Celia Cruz show up for Sandoval's 11th album, they're largely wasted on a slate of too-polite, overly slick slabs of crossover-oriented jazz-pop with only the most minimal Latin content. Sandoval and crew do perfectly acceptable versions of standards like "I Can't Get Started" and Dizzy Gillespie's "Bebop," and Sandoval's originals are generally pleasantly tuneful, but they're roughly equivalent to Pérez Prado's lightweight exotica of the '50s. The nadir is a terrible version of "Colors of the Wind," the treacly theme from the animated film Pocahontas given an utterly unswinging, sluggish reading that makes the song sound even worse than it already did. This album is to Afro-Cuban jazz as Taco Bell is to Mexican food. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

Miles Davis-kind Of Blue(1959)

Regarded by experts as "the best jazz recording of all time, " the 1959 release Kind of Blue is one of the most influential albums in the history of jazz. The new hardcover deluxe edition of this exceptional book features transcriptions of all the improvised solos as well as sketch scores for all the songs from this landmark release; this includes Miles' trumpet parts, the brilliant sax work of John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderly, a full transcription of Wynton Kelly's solo on "Freddie Freeloader, " and rhythm section parts to use as guides for the feel of each composition. Songs include: So What
-- Freddie Freeloader
-- Blue in Green
-- All Blues
-- and Flamenco Sketches, including an alternate take. Also includes fabulous photos and an essay written specifically for this edition by composer Bill Kirchner, who won a Grammy for his notes on Sony's Miles Davis/Gil Evans boxed set, and edited The Miles Davis Reader for Smithsonian Institution Press.

Tracklist :

2. Freddie Freeloader
